TMNT Story List: Post-Sale Stories (2010 – date)

for a list of all TMNT posts Click Here

Here is a list of stories set in the main Mirage Studios’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continuity. These stories were released following the sale of the property to Viacom and the final issue of the second volume of Tales of the TMNT being released.

Previous eras had a sustained run of stories, but following the Viacom purchase, adventures with the original version of the TMNT became an occasional thing. An occasional thing that wasn’t necessarily “official”. However, this list is not looking for a Viacom seal of approval to include stories.

Instead this list includes stories set in the main Mirage continuity, written by writers whose work has appeared on previous Story Lists. There is one exception to this, which is explained in the notes.

Although there is no longer someone ruling on canon, some presumptions have been made. Anything that would likely have been declared “non-canon” but is non-contradictory has been included, listed in blue if only to keep consistency with previous Story Lists.

This particular list also introduces a listing in grey, for a story where the declared fit with main Mirage continuity is somewhat dubious.

Short stories (the bulk of this list) are indicated by “(short)” after their name and stories that appeared in colour are indicated with “(colour)”.

It should be noted that alongside these stories trickling out, there was the Andrew Modeen-led expansion of the TMNT story – something that is directly responsible for a couple of the stories listed below being available. Whilst the Modeen TMNT itself is not included on this list, it’s worth a read and more details can be found <link coming soon>

Additional notes can be found at the end of the list.

NOTES

Practical Jokes/Conflict Resolution
These two shorts were originally pitched for Tales of the TMNT. They were eventually produced as backup strips for the fan-produced (Vol. 3) #24. Prior to their print appearance, digital versions of both stories were posted to the Technodrome Forums.

The ending for each story frames these as tales told during Volume 3 and so are listed in blue (like the rest of Volume 3), but are included here as they fit just fine.

Slash!
This story was produced as part of a fan tribute book being put together by Go Green Machine. The book was greenlit by Mirage, but then cancelled during the Viacom buyout. It seems it was first posted online in the comment section of one of Peter Laird’s blog posts, but a better place to view it would be this TMNT Entity post, which has it at a higher resolution (and also provides some background information).

Listed in blue as had this seen print, it would have probably been declared non-canon, much like This Mortal Shell in Tales (Vol. 2). Like that tale, however, it fits fine so is included on the list.

Rest in Pieces/Downtime
These two shorts are written to be part of Volume 3, so are listed in blue (like the rest of Volume 3), but included here as they fit just fine.

My Mutagan Mother
The title is taken from the cover of the collected edition of this three-part story. Part one was printed as Turtles 2030 #1, available as part of Jim Lawson’s “The Box City Wallops Color Specials!” Kickstarter. The second and third parts were never released individually, but the full tale was later available to purchase as a collected edition (TMNT 2030) from Lawson’s website.

Mirage 1 Story
The title given for this Black and White (and Blue) Kevin Eastman tale is taken from the contents page of the issue in which it appeared, but it seems like a placeholder one. An alternative name could be “Alone” after the Edgar Allan Poe poem that provides the text to this short story.

The (presumed) placeholder title and the fact the contents page groups it under “Mirage” is the reason for its inclusion on this list. However… it’s very clearly a tie-in to The Last Ronin.

Although the original idea started off as being part of the main Mirage continuity, in its final published form The Last Ronin is incompatible with it. This short story’s labelling then, could be considered a mistake, but an alternative interpretation could be that Eastman is implying that a version of The Last Ronin still occurs in the main Mirage continuity.

Untold Tales of the TMNT (Will Tupper, Ross May, Tristan Jones)

for a list of all TMNT posts Click Here

Running for seventy issues (some having multiple stories inside), Mirage Studio's second volume of Tales of the TMNT makes up the bulk of stories on the Volume 4 Era Story List.

There were additional stories pitched for the title which didn't make it. It could be they were rejected, plans changed or the comic simply ran out of issues for them to appear in. Those that are known about however, are listed below, grouped by writer, along with handy clickable links to outlines and other material, or in the case of the first writer listed below, the completed stories.

Will Tupper

Tales (Vol. 2) featured four Will Tupper-penned shorts: The Mother of All Anger (#30), Credo (#33), Secret Spirit (#35) and Fathers and Daughters (#41). Each focuses on a specific character: Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo, and Casey. Although a short focusing on Michelangelo was sold to Mirage, ultimately it would not appear in the series.

That story, titled Practical Jokes, would later be completed to appear as a backup in the fan-produced Volume 3 conclusion, specifically (Vol. 3) #24.

Before its appearance in print, it would be posted on the Technodrome Forums and can be read here.

A second short from Will Tupper that didn't appear in Tales, but which would later be printed as a backup in (Vol. 3) #24 was Conflict Resolution, which tells the tale of what happened immediately following the final page of Me, Myself and I (Raphael #1).

This too would be posted on the Technodrome Forums here, but the archived page is incomplete.

Both stories can of course be read as part of (Vol. 3) #24, a digital copy of which can be found here.

Ross May

Tales (Vol. 2) #22 featured the story Change of Power. Written by Ross May, it introduced the character of the "Mistress", setting up further tales... which did not happen.

More to this story was planned, however. First up Many Deceptions was posted as an outline on Ross May's blog here. Additionally, artist Scott Cohn posted pencils for the cover and the first nine pages on his blog here.

A third, concluding part was also planned. Titled Night Rain, Ross May posted a script/summary hybrid to his blog that can be read here.

Also of note on Ross May's blog was a series of posts titled "Ninja Notes" that provide some behind-the-scenes information on the storyline:

Tristan Jones

A number of story outlines were posted by Tristan Jones on his blog and are linked below.

WARNING: At some point Tristan lost access to the blog and it was taken over. Although it hasn't been updated since 2010, there are several spam posts and dubious-looking links. If visiting, be careful where you click.

One post features four different outlines:

Power of the Media (an early version of Exposé from #59)
Rise of the Dragon (a two-parter)
Nemesis Prime
Akuma Wa-Mu

It can be read by clicking here.

There's also a untitled Bebop and Rocksteady story posted here. It should be noted that this was "pitched as a non-canon story for something like FCBD" rather than for Tales.

The majority of the outlines posted are for Jones' "Gang Wars" storyline which began with To Serve and Protect (#36). This includes the original rejected three-part follow-up Thicker Than Water, which was to "continue and conclude" the story.

The other outlines are as follows:

My Enemy's Enemy (featuring the Mistress from Ross May's storyline)

TMNT Story List: Volume 4 Era (2001 – 2010)

for a list of all TMNT posts Click Here

Here is a list of stories from the Volume 4 era of Mirage Studios’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This was the final run of issues before Peter Laird sold the TMNT property to Viacom. Further stories would follow, however, and some of the stories on this list were also published post-sale.

This list ends with the final issue of Tales of the TMNT (Volume 2) which provides the bulk of the stories here. Also included is the fourth volume itself, some mini-series and a few other stories.

A couple of non-canon stories that still fit with the main Mirage continuity are listed in blue.

Stories are listed in order of release (ish) as well as details of where and when they first appeared. Short stories are indicated by “(short)” after their name and a story that appeared in colour is indicated with “(colour)”.

NOTES

Post-sale releases
Viacom purchased the TMNT property from Peter Laird in late October 2009, but he maintained the right to publish up to eighteen TMNT comics a year set in the Mirage universe. For this list, stories from titles that were being released pre-sale have been included. The issues released post-sale that feature on this list are Tales (Vol. 2) #64-70, Donatello: The Brain Thief #3-4 and (Vol. 4) #31-32.

Volume 4
Although #22 can be read as a standalone issue, Volume 4 issues flow into each other as one continuous story. Issues were printed without titles and so the whole run is listed here as simply “Volume 4”. Although previously available digitally, #31 received a physical release in May 2015 (a year after #32). To date the story remains unfinished.

Seeds of Destruction/ The Quick and the Dead
Two linked stories featuring Foot Mystics, listed separately as some time has passed between them. A third story was promised but never materialised.

Tales of Leonardo: Blind Sight
The placement of this story has been moved forward as it spins out of (and follows on shortly after) Blind Faith.

First Mud/Apocalypse Vow/Altered Fates/The Doors of Deception
Unlike previous shorts with the Utrom, this series of adventures featuring Professor Obligado all flow into one another so are grouped together. The story was unfinished, but a conclusion would later serve as a prologue to Origin. link at some point

The Trophy/The Rippling/This Mortal Shell
The page count for these stories has been noted as they are longer than a typical short, but shorter than a full-blown adventure.

Change of Power
This story introduced the “Mistress” and set up something that would not be concluded in subsequent issues of Tales. However, writer Ross May posted an outline for a follow-up story on his blog, with artist Scott Cohn posting pencils for the cover and first nine pages on his blog. May would also post a script/summary of the concluding third part. More details here.

The character of the Mistress would also feature in an unreleased “Gang Wars” story as well as the fan-produced Volume 3 conclusion.

re-imagined (Vol. 1) #8
In 2003 Peter Laird announced a “re-imagining” of (Vol. 1) #8 that would “replace the original #8 in official Mirage continuity and tell an all-new tale of how the Turtles met Savanti Romero and the timestress Renet”. Possibly commissioned due to doubts that the original story featuring Dave Sim’s Cerebus could be reprinted, it was said it was likely to be printed sometime that year.

That didn’t happen, but it would later see print in 2007 in Spain as part of Norma Editorial’s Las Tortugas Ninja Volumen 2 and in 2016 in Russia as part of Illusion Studios’ Tales of the TMNT Vol. 1. The Russian release included a one-page epilogue that had been left out of the Spanish release. There has never been an official English language release of the story but a fan translation (based on the Spanish release) was produced and printed as an unofficial Tales of the TMNT (Vol. 2) #71.

Peter Laird would later comment on his blog “I actually prefer the original #8, and since I was able to come to a meeting of the minds with Dave Sim about it, I would say that THAT is the "canon" version”. However, the story is written in a way that it can still fit, so it has been included on this list.

Raphael: Bad Moon Rising
Like Tales of Leonardo: Blind Sight, this story spins out of the events of a Tales (Vol. 2) issue (specifically #7), but is set almost a year later and so not grouped with the previous tale.

To Serve and Protect/Hun/Exposé/Sometimes They Come Back/The Burning Man
A series of linked stories, listed separately as they don’t directly follow on from each other. This “Gang Wars” storyline lacks a conclusion, but writer Tristan Jones posted outlines for a number of other instalments on his blog, including the original (rejected) three-part conclusion that was to follow To Serve and Protect.  More details here.

A Gang Wars short would later be included in TMNT 40th Anniversary Comics Celebration.

Silent Night
This story was printed without a title, but was given one on the Mirage website.

The Crystal at the Heart of the World/ All Tomorrow's Yesterdays
A two-part story, but with a mention that time has passed between parts, so these are listed separately.

This Mortal Shell
Produced by students of the Centre for Cartoon Studies (Vermont), the introduction to this issue specifically noted it as being non-canon. However, it doesn’t contradict anything so has been included on this list.

Notes:

- This book lacks an ISBN.

- New Comic Day!, 49th Street Stompers, D’Ants Fever, The Road Trip, You Had to be There and Night Life are all stories that were originally in colour, but which are presented here in black and white.

D’Ant’s Fever is listed on the contents page as Rick’s Dive. Artwork and dialogue have also been altered throughout the story to replace references to “Munden” and “Munden’s Bar” with “Rick” and “Rick’s Dive”. The instructional sign on the door at the start has also been altered to a cautionary one: “No Standards, No Morals, No Ethics, No Conscious. Enter At Your Own Risk”.

- The final page in Not One Word! Was originally a landscape image rotated to fit on a single page. Here it is turned into a two-page spread. It is slightly cropped, losing some of the laughter effects that extend outside the border of the artwork.

Challenges

Mirage Studios (Softcover, Hardcover), 1991

Challenges

An original Graphic Novel, split in to short tales (Origin, Splinter, Raphael, Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello).

Notes:

This book lacks an ISBN.

- Printed significantly smaller than other books on this list (digest size).

Not Collected (but available elsewhere)
With the stories listed above, the original graphic novel Challenges is the story that is furthest along on the Volume 1 Story List, with nothing past that point collected. However, most of the stories before then were collected, although D’Ant’s Fever and The Road Trip were unavailable in their original form. That’s also true of Silent Partner and Not One Word!, but to a much lesser extent.

Although some stories have yet to be collected anywhere, a lot of them would later be collected by IDW Publishing. Full details are on the IDW Bookshelf page, but for quick reference, the following stories were later collected by IDW in some form:

The Lesson: A Tale of the Triceraton Marines (short) Grunts#1

Choices (short) The Puma Blues #20

Casey Jones, Private Eye (short) Mirage Mini Comics

Donatello: The Ring (short) (colour) Turtle Soup (Vol. 2) #1

Twilight of the Ring (Vol. 1) #37

Juliet's Revenge (Vol. 1) #42

Halls of Lost Legends (Vol. 1) #43

The Violent Underground (Vol. 1) #44

Leatherhead, Too (Vol. 1) #45

Masks (Vol. 1) #46-47

Shades of Gray (Vol. 1) #48-49

City at War (Vol. 1) #50-62

In addition to the IDW releases, Dark Horse Comic would release Usagi Yojimbo/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete Collection which includes the shorts Turtle Soup and Rabbit Stew (Turtle Soup (Vol. 1) #1) and The Crossing (Usagi Yojimbo (Vol. 1) #10).

Not Collected
The story King For a Day which appeared in The Collected Gizmo trade paperback is not available in a TMNT-branded book, nor is Gizmo and The Fugitoid (Gizmo and the Fugitoid #1-2), but as neither feature the Turtles, that is understandable.

Many of the other stories that feature on the Story List, but which haven’t been collected can be summarised as “stuff from Turtle Soup”. From the original one-shot there is Turtle Dreams and Apparition. From the mini-series there is Turtles Attack!!! which ran across all four issues, The Purpose of Fear and The Name is Lucindra from #1, Raphael: Snapper from #2, Sweat, Sweat, Sweet Renet, The Ring of Death and Crack in a Hard Heart from #3 and finally, from the fourth issue, Fifteen Years Later... and Thoughts on Paper.

The remaining uncollected stories from the Volume 1 era are Sky Highway ((Vol. 1) #30), A Christmas Carol (Michaelangelo Christmas Special), Muscle & Faith (only available on the Flying Color Comics website), North By Downeast (Casey Jones #1-2) and Old Times (Plastron Café #1).

TMNT Volume 2 and 3 Bookshelf

for a list of all TMNT posts Click Here

Here is a list of shelf-friendly collected editions of stories from the Volume 2 and Volume 3 eras of Mirage Studios’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (well Image Comics in the case of Volume 3).

Compared to Volume 1, there are less options available, but the bulk of the stories have been collected, albeit mostly in a different form to their original release.

Books are ordered based on the Volume 2 and 3 Story List. Only TMNT collected editions are detailed here, but this is followed by a brief summary of other releases. Finally there is a list of what hasn’t been collected.

Like the Story List, any non-canon stories that were written to be part of the main Mirage continuity (so Volume 3) are listed in blue and any colour stories are indicated by “(colour)” after their name.

* - indicates reprinted story differs notably from the original version in some way. Details are provided in the notes.

All books were also released digitally unless indicated otherwise.

Bodycount #1-4

Notes:
- Only the IDW-Topshelf version was released digitally.

- The Heavy Metal and IDW-Topshelf versions change all the white page borders to black.

- The Heavy Metal release has a printing error: the thirty-sixth story page is replaced with a duplicate of the thirty-ninth.

- All releases include a seven-page bonus “A Look Back” by Kevin Eastman, providing background information on the story as well as small images including sketches, layouts and inked pages.
  • The Heavy Metal edition removes the 1996 date from the final page sign-off, but is otherwise the same as the original Image presentation of the bonus material.
  • The IDW-Topshelf edition has a different layout style for the bonus, but uses the same images and text, until the final page which replaces the 1996 text with a 2018 written piece, similar in tone and including additional thanks.

- The IDW-Topshelf release was also available with a (convention exclusive) Black and White cover.

Notes:
- Issues are listed here as Volume 3 for simplicity, but these are the Urban Legends versions that colourise the issues.

- The #1-5 arc lacks the extra page that was added in the Image trade paperback.

- With this volume only printing up to #13, the arc from #12-16 is split across volumes.

- "Volume One" is absent from the cover of this release, but is used in the indicia.

- With each volume printing thirteen issues, the arc from #12-16 is split across volumes.

Non-Turtles reprints of interest

Much like TMNT there have been numerous collected editions of Usagi Yojimbo and Savage Dragon and these reprints have included stories the Turtles guest starred in. Whilst this summary doesn’t aim to be comprehensive, here are some options for the crososvers of the Volume 2 era:

Shades of Green which originally appeared in Usagi Yojimbo (Vol. 2) #1-3 was included in Usagi Yojimbo – Volume 8: Shades of Death and also The Usagi Yojimbo Saga – Book 1. Both of these ditch the colour of the original issues and present the story in black and white. Both books have also received a digital release.

Perhaps the best option for Shades of Green (at least from a TMNT point of view) is Usagi Yojimbo/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete Collection which not only reprints the Volume 2 era crossover (again in black and white), but the three Volume 1 era stories as well.

There are also multiple options for the Savage Dragon crossovers, though it should be noted that only the Savage Dragon issue for each is included and not the Mirage one-shots. This means the conclusion is missing from the first crossover and the opening part is absent from the second.

For the first crossover The Savage Dragon #2 was included in Savage Dragon - Volume 2: A Force to Be Reckoned With, Savage Dragon Archives - Volume 1 (also released digitally) and Savage Dragon: Ultimate Collection – Vol. 1. The Archives release is in black and white.

For the second crossover The Savage Dragon #22 was included in Savage Dragon - Volume 6: Gang War and Savage Dragon Archives - Volume 2 (also released digitally). The Archives release is in black and white.
The issue is also listed for the forthcoming Savage Dragon: Ultimate Collection – Vol. 3.

The Savage Dragon #22
was slightly expanded for the collected edition release, with the addition of two extra (single image) pages towards the end. As it is the first issue in the collection, the Kindle preview for Archives – Volume 2 allows the full issue (including the extra pages) to be read.

Not Collected
Although much of it differs from the original presentation in some way, the bulk of the stories from the Volume 2 and 3 eras are available in book form.

As mentioned, the Mirage halves of the Savage Dragon crossovers (The Savage Dragon/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/The Savage Dragon #1) have not been collected.

Sticking with crossovers, Dreamstone from Creed/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 has not been collected either.

Finally Galahad from Big Bang Comics (Image series) #10 also lacks a shelf-friendly book release.
